A New Domain Controller
Posted: May 21st, 2009 | Author: admin | Filed under: Windows Vista Fun | No Comments »No one knows what this means. Well – geeks do – but no one els.
I only work with one geek and thats me. Sometimes i put on a mask and talk to myself – makes me feel less wierd? yah.
Ok – so setting up a new domain controller is fine and dandy if you implement it or decide to take X amount of time and induce this bitch – but its NOT fun when you wake up one morning with crusties still in your eyes and realize that no UNC paths work – no network related actions are happening – event logs tell you services have failed – rebooting and attempting the obvious geek tweaks does nothing – you start to think – holy shit.
Knowing full well plans existed to migrate this bastard in the next 2 months – I was aok with it doing its thing – until it was no longer able to do its thing. Ok so – enough about the stupid OLD server.. who cares anyway – it only authenticates authenticated our entire domain and manages managed IP’s within the local network while acting it acted as our authenticating active directory server – with – no failover solution. Let’s establish the fact this Windows 2003 server was fouled up upon my inception into this gig – with an improperly named yet over utilized domain controller (not to mention every other role on the planet) with ONLY two xeon processors from the northwood days (geeks dont laugh). Everyone else can wish they knew how horrible a 533 FSB and 1mb of cache means to a hard working server.Oh yeah – enough about that OLD server. I forgot.
So – this new server – a 1U Proliant Rack from HP, with 6gb of fully buff’d ram and a quad core xeon @ 2.0ghz (1333 FSB / 12mb Cache) is supremely and awesomely wicked. The processes at this point don’t even come close to pushing this server to a crucial level – in fact – other roles may be planned. Also, with the ability to introduce a second processor core into this machine – we can easily double our processing power quickly. The thing hums a bit. Actually – a shit load more than my custom build 4U server which is better outlined here. Of course – with double the ram and double the processor power – the 4U I built is substantially faster.. but well .. we shant discuss that right now!
On the other hand – these proliant 1u’s are impressive. I have plans to integrate one or two more within the next one or two months – one taking on the role of a second domain controller for a second domain within the organization and another for virtualized processes which should be in place this summer. VMWare? Hyper-V? Virtual PC? Oh – hell – lets discuss that too – another time.
On with the controller! So this new domain is in place and things are looking very up. From my perspective – shit – things couldn’t be better now that last week is over and i now find solstice within the 2008 functional level.
It’s getting very late to get much more inspired about how MUCH BETTER this new domain controller is for our company – but then again… its late – and – who the hell cares.
Oh yeah – i do.
